Publishing With Continuum

‘In today’s anodyne times Continuum is a publisher that continuously breaks new ground with books that push the boundaries of our intellectual and political understanding’ – The Institute of Ideas

Continuum is an independent publishing house (one of the few left) without ties to any of the large multinational groups. We have offices in London and New York; in each location, editorial teams work side-by-side with sales and marketing colleagues. Our international reach is extended by our own sales team, travelling across the globe, and by agents located in many of our key markets.

We publish around 600 books per year – and firmly intend that this number will climb, with a carefully selected group of titles joining our list each year. We publish for academic, religious and trade markets, and are actively commissioning in Education, Film, History, Linguistics, Literary Studies, Media Studies, Music, Philosophy, Politics, Biblical Studies, General Religion, Religious Studies and Theology.

We believe that our publishing house is distinctive in a number of ways. We are relatively small and absolutely nimble, able to take decisions quickly, especially about new publications. We have strong design values, with a highly capable in-house team working on cover designs which are frequently complimented, not least by our competitors. We have a production team which buys printing and binding services worldwide, and takes quality seriously. We have creative sales and marketing teams, in regular communication with customers everywhere, now building strong electronic communication with our readership.

We are always interested in talking to potential authors and discussing new ideas. Send us a proposal for your next project, visit our stand at one of the many conferences and events we attend or get in touch with one of our editors by email.

Style Guidelines

When a book is contracted, we provide our authors with a set of guidelines. This is a comprehensive guide to all aspects of submitting your manuscript, including the presentation of the manuscript and disc, guidelines for the text, headings, notes and references.

On matters of style and manuscript format, Continuum, like other publishers, follows the Chicago Manual of Style, 14th (or 15th) edition. Use Webster’s Dictionary (11th edition) for questions of spelling.

A copy of the guidelines can be downloaded here: US Submission Guidelines

Author Questionnaire

The Author Questionnaire is a key tool used by the sales and marketing department, and the information you provide helps us to promote your book. Please give us as much detail as possible. The author questionnaire is divided into four sections. An explanation of these is provided below.

Section 1: Author Details
Please provide as much information as you can. This will assist in communication with you during the publishing process and will help provide background information that will be useful for sales and marketing.

Section 2: The Book
Information that you provide in this area will help us to create an Advanced Information sheet for your book. This is distributed to our sales force, overseas agents, bibliographic agencies and wholesalers and distributors in order to obtain advance orders.

Section 3: The Market
Please provide as much information as possible in this section as it will help us to market your book. This includes details of societies that are most likely to be interested in your book and forthcoming meetings at which your book could be displayed. We are always interested to hear about any events at which you will be speaking or participating. Please also provide us with details of newspapers or journals that may be interested in reviewing your title.

Section 4: Publicity
We are often approached by the media and booksellers regarding author interviews, signings and promotional activities. Please indicate what kinds of promotional activity you are happy to participate in.
